Biden Administration Sued by Texas to Obtain Voter Citizenship Data

As the U.S. presidential election draws near, a new legal confrontation intensifying the ongoing debate over voter registration and election integrity has come to light. The State of Texas Attorney General, Ken Paxton, filed a lawsuit against the Biden Administration seeking to access information on the citizenship status of the state’s voters.

The lawsuit which was filed in October 2024 seeks to compel the federal government to release records that Texas officials believe are crucial to ensure that only U.S. citizens are registered to vote in the upcoming elections. This lawsuit gives strength to ongoing tensions over voting rights and election security which are both critical issues in the larger debate over election integrity in the United States.

Case Insights: Biden Administration Sued by Texas to Obtain Voter Citizenship Data

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a lawsuit against the Biden administration, demanding access to federal data that would help determine the citizenship status of registered voters in Texas. The lawsuit aims to obtain critical information regarding individuals who may have been illegally registered to vote without valid Texas-issued IDs.

He previously wrote a letter requesting support in verifying 450,000 voters’ citizenship status by Oct. 19. Just 4 days after the proposed deadline, the Texas Attorney General filed the lawsuit.

Paxton argued that the Biden administration has a legal obligation to assist states in maintaining voter roll integrity, asserting that citizenship data would enable Texas to identify non-citizens on the voter registry. According to him, this lawsuit is part of a broader effort to secure Texas elections and prevent voter fraud, which has been a contentious issue across the country.

Texas is specifically asking for access to the federal Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) database, which contains information on individuals’ immigration status. The state intends to cross-check this data with its voter rolls to identify any non-citizens who may have registered to vote illegally.

Biden administration’s alleged refusal to provide data on non-citizens

The lawsuit specifically targets the Biden administration’s alleged refusal to provide data on non-citizens, data which Paxton believes is crucial for verifying the legitimacy of voter registrations. Texas has expressed concerns that non-citizens could be improperly registering to vote, possibly undermining the accuracy and integrity of the state’s electoral process.

This legal action comes at a time when voter fraud and election integrity continue to be a critical issue in Texas and across the United States. Paxton’s efforts align with broader conservative concerns about potential vulnerabilities in the voting system, and his office has been involved in multiple cases related to election laws over the years.

Critics of Paxton’s lawsuit, including voting rights advocates, have expressed concerns that efforts like these could lead to voter suppression, particularly for marginalized groups, and could create unnecessary barriers for legitimate voters.

Reactions to Lawsuit

Voting rights advocates are concerned. Critics of the lawsuit argue that efforts like these could lead to voter suppression by causing confusion and fear among voters, particularly in immigrant communities. Many fear that eligible voters could be wrongfully removed from the rolls if the state acts on inaccurate or incomplete data.

There is also the fear that that the release of such data could infringe on the privacy of individuals and lead to voter suppression.

Looking Ahead – Biden Administration Sued by Texas to Obtain Voter Citizenship Data

As the case unfolds, it seems that both sides are preparing for a protracted legal battle. Regardless of the outcome, the lawsuit has already reignited discussions about voter rights and election security, a debate that is likely to grow louder as the 2024 elections approach.
