A new group of migrants embarked on a journey from Tapachula, a city near Mexico’s border with Guatemala, toward the United States on Thursday. While past migrant caravans have struggled to reach their ultimate destination, this group remains determined to press forward despite significant obstacles.
A Diverse Group Seeking Hope
Most participants in the caravan hail from Venezuela, but the group also includes migrants from Guatemala, El Salvador, Peru, and Ecuador. Frustrated by delays and restrictive government policies preventing their transit through Mexico, the migrants are motivated by a desire for better opportunities.
One Venezuelan migrant, a 29-year-old woman, shared her frustrations about waiting nearly three months for an asylum appointment through the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) One app. Her immediate focus, however, is to reach Mexico City, where she hopes to find work and decide whether to continue northward or return home to Venezuela.
Tapachula: A City Strained by Migration
Tapachula has become a bottleneck for thousands of migrants stuck in the city due to stringent migration controls. Migrants struggle to find employment, while the city is overwhelmed by the number of people seeking refuge.
One family from El Salvador expressed their determination to continue the journey. A father traveling with his wife and 10-year-old son revealed their aspiration to reach the United States but admitted they might settle in Mexico if their plans falter. Given Mexico’s history of breaking up such caravans, he acknowledged the difficulty of advancing beyond Tapachula.
Challenges Along the Way
The road ahead is fraught with challenges. Mexican officials have consistently dismantled similar caravans shortly after their departure. In November, authorities dispersed two caravans not far from Tapachula, highlighting the slim chances of the group making significant progress.
Historical patterns show that, apart from the larger caravans in 2018 and 2019, which benefited from transportation assistance, most migrant groups have failed to reach the U.S. border cohesively. Some individuals have managed to complete the journey, but most face roadblocks, detentions, or deportations.
A Systemic Struggle
Migrant caravans have long faced obstacles in Mexico, including harassment by law enforcement and immigration agents. Many are forced to return to the Guatemalan border or remain in overcrowded camps, such as the one currently overwhelmed in downtown Mexico City.

Despite these challenges, the migrants in this caravan are holding on to hope. For many, the journey represents a physical trek and a chance to reclaim their future. The hardships of the road are a stark reminder of the complexities of migration as policies and practical barriers continue to shape their paths.
Whether they reach the United States, find refuge in Mexico, or return to their home countries, the caravan underscores the resilience of individuals seeking safety, stability, and opportunity in a world increasingly divided by borders.
