Homeland Security Deploys 2,000 Officers to Minnesota in Largest Immigration Operation to Date

The Department of Homeland Security has launched what it describes as its largest immigration enforcement operation, deploying approximately 2,000 federal agents to Minnesota. The operation centers on immigration enforcement and fraud investigations, significantly expanding the federal law enforcement presence in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area.

Large-Scale Federal Deployment in Minnesota

Homeland Security has begun a sweeping immigration enforcement operation in Minnesota, with roughly 2,000 officers from multiple federal agencies assigned to the region. The deployment marks a significant escalation in immigration enforcement activity, particularly in and around the Twin Cities.

Federal officials indicated that most personnel are drawn from Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations division, responsible for immigration arrests and deportations. Additional agents from Homeland Security Investigations are involved, along with tactical units and personnel from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Focus on Immigration Enforcement and Fraud Investigations

The operation includes investigations into suspected immigration fraud, human smuggling, and illegal employment practices. Investigative teams have been reported conducting fieldwork across neighborhoods, business areas, and residential areas throughout the Minneapolis–St. Paul metro area.

Authorities reported that more than 150 arrests were made during the early stages of the operation, with enforcement actions continuing as agents remain active across the region. Federal officials noted that the scope and duration of the operation may change as investigations proceed.

Community Tensions and State Response

The enforcement surge has faced intense criticism from Minnesota state leaders and local officials. They expressed concerns about coordination, the impact on communities, and the scale of the federal presence. Advocacy groups and residents reported an increase in federal vehicles and agents, which heightened anxiety among immigrant communities.

The operation comes as scrutiny continues over enforcement methods in Minnesota, especially concerning Somali American communities. Federal officials have previously linked these communities to fraud investigations related to federal aid programs.

Broader Enforcement Strategy

The Minnesota deployment fits into the Trump administration’s larger immigration enforcement strategy. This strategy emphasizes robust internal enforcement and expanded investigative authority. Federal agencies suggest that similar large-scale operations may occur in other areas as part of ongoing efforts to address immigration violations and fraud.

Looking Ahead

As federal agencies keep up their enforcement activities in Minnesota, legal advocates, state officials, and immigrant communities are closely watching developments. The operation raises ongoing questions about enforcement priorities, the impact on communities, and coordination between federal and state agencies.
