10 Arrested in Planned Shooting at Texas ICE Detention Center

Ten individuals are facing federal charges following what authorities describe as a premeditated assault targeting a U.S. immigration detention center in Texas. The attack, which occurred on the night of July 4th, left one police officer wounded and raised alarms about politically motivated violence tied to federal immigration enforcement.

The incident occurred at the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, approximately 40 miles southwest of Dallas. Officials say the group arrived at the facility equipped with military-style gear, firearms, and coordinated tactics intended to lure Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel into an ambush.

Independence Day Ambush

Fireworks initiated the attack outside the detention center, as well as graffiti on vehicles and a guard station with anti-ICE messages. Vandalism involved the use of language like “traitor” and “ICE pig.” These events appeared to have been deliberately planned to provoke a police reaction.

When two unarmed corrections officers approached the group in the facility’s parking lot, a person in nearby woods signaled with a flashlight. Moments later, gunfire erupted from multiple directions. A responding Alvarado police officer was struck in the neck and hospitalized before being released.

Evidence of Tactical Planning and Extreme Messaging

Police recovered an AR-style assault rifle at the scene, which had supposedly jammed during the attack. Police also recovered propaganda materials, including an anti-government language flag and flyers for resistance to ICE. These materials suggest that the group intended to carry out a politically motivated attack.

Further searches yielded tactical vests, body armor, two-way radios, and other paramilitary gear. Authorities believe these items were used to coordinate movements and hide identities during the operation.

Law Enforcement Quick Response Leads to Arrests

Sheriff’s deputies rushed to arrest seven men about 300 yards from the scene of the shooting. They were wearing body armor and were heavily soiled from walking through the woods. Two other suspects were stopped while trying to flee in a van carrying two AR-style rifles, a handgun, and other tactical equipment. According to federal investigators, the driver of the truck admitted to transporting several individuals from Dallas to the detention facility after meeting them online.

A Second Attack Raises Further Concerns

Just days later, a separate shooting occurred over 400 miles south in McAllen, Texas. In that incident, a gunman opened fire with an assault rifle outside a Border Patrol facility, wounding one law enforcement officer before being fatally shot by responding agents. Officials have yet to confirm a connection between the two incidents, but they are being actively investigated.

Federal authorities have since enhanced security at the Prairieland Center and other facilities, citing a requirement to safeguard federal officers and detainees from increased tensions.

Federal Charges and Investigation Underway

The ten arrested individuals, most from the Dallas–Fort Worth region, are charged with three counts each of attempted murder of a federal officer and three counts of discharging a firearm during a violent crime. An eleventh person faces charges of obstruction of justice and conspiracy after allegedly trying to conceal and destroy evidence related to the assault.

Authorities have not yet released the court dates or details of legal representation for the defendants. Federal court documents indicate that the investigation is ongoing, with additional evidence being gathered from devices, communications, and social media platforms tied to the suspects.

Looking Ahead

The Department of Justice and Homeland Security officials emphasize that politically motivated violence against immigration officers will be prosecuted to the fullest extent. As deportation efforts intensify under the Trump administration’s renewed immigration agenda, law enforcement remains on high alert for further attempts to target federal personnel and facilities.
