No Place Feels Safe: ICE Raids at Schools, Hospitals, Churches, and Courthouses

Once upon a time, some spaces were off-limits for immigration enforcement. Schools, hospitals, and churches. Places where kids learn, people heal, and communities worship. They were called “protected spaces.”

But not anymore.

In January, the administration tossed out the protections that kept ICE out of those spaces. A recent memo gave field officers the power to decide when and where to make arrests. No bright lines or guarantees. Just discretion.

Schools are no longer safe.

Imagine walking your child to school with the thought in your head: Will ICE be waiting? Parents are already asking that question.

Educators report families pulling back. Some kids miss class. Others show up, but with serious anxiety. School leaders say they’re bracing for the impact of stepped-up enforcement, even though DHS insists schools aren’t targets.

But that’s not how fear works. If parents believe the risk is real, they act on it. They keep their kids home, and education takes the hit.

Health care comes with a risk.

Hospitals should be the last place anyone worries about getting arrested. But that has become a worry today.

The Washington Post told a story of a patient detained at a hospital. One arrest is enough to ripple through entire communities. People cancel hospital appointments. They avoid clinics. They wait until they’re too sick and their illnesses have worsened.

Doctors and public health experts warn about the effect. It puts whole communities at risk. Kids miss vaccines. Diseases spread. And emergencies get worse. All because a hospital visit feels dangerous.

Churches lose their sanctuary.

Faith spaces have always been a refuge. A place to pray, to belong. Now that is in question.

Congregations across the country have pushed back. Some have taken ICE to court, arguing that enforcement in houses of worship violates religious freedom. A few judges have stepped in with temporary injunctions.

But lawsuits take time.

When people believe they could be pulled out of a pew or questioned after Mass, many just stop coming. This weakens communities. Worship becomes another thing people give up to stay safe.

Courthouses are risky, too.

It’s not just schools, hospitals, and churches. ICE has also expanded enforcement in courthouses. That means witnesses may skip hearings. Survivors of domestic violence may not show up to seek protection. Defendants might avoid court altogether.

Justice can’t work if people are too afraid to enter the building. And yet, that’s where we are.

What’s at stake:

When parents won’t take their kids to school, when patients won’t see doctors, and when worshippers avoid their churches, the entire country pays the price. Kids lose education. Communities lose health. Families lose faith.

Enforcement has crossed into spaces that should remain sacred.

Moving forward:

Policies like these affect communities as a whole. They hurt kids, parents, teachers, doctors, etc. They tear at the fabric that holds us together.

And it doesn’t have to be this way.

Lawmakers could restore protections for sensitive spaces. They could ensure ICE focuses on criminals instead of regular, everyday people. They could put community safety above political theater.

But until then, families need help navigating the reality we’re living in.
