June Records Decline in Number of Border Arrests

Figures released on Monday, from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection showed that arrests for illegal border crossing dropped by 29% in June (the lowest since Joe Biden’s administration), a month that saw a new rule suspending asylum claims temporarily come into effect.

In total, there were 83,536 arrests made in June which was down from the 117,901 in May and the lowest figure since January 2021.

U.S. Custom and Border Protection Acting Commissioner, Troy Miller, said a seven-day average of daily apprehensions had decreased more than fifty percent at the end of June after President Biden announced on June 4 that asylum processing would stop when daily apprehensions reached 2,500, which they did immediately.

“Recent border security measures have significantly improved our ability to impose penalties for crossing over illegitimately,” said Miller.

What is the proof that border security has improved?

According to American officials, arrests fell by more than half from peak levels of around 250,000 recorded in December as a result of tougher action taken against it by Mexico.

Mexicans and Chinese people are among the nationalities that have faced the highest negative impacts of the suspension of asylum claims, with most of them coming to Ecuador then traveling by flight to the USA.

The highest number of arrests along the US-Mexico border were made in San Diego, which was followed by Tucson, Arizona.

In June alone, over 41,000 people were legally admitted via CBP One online appointment app. The agency stated that since January 2023 when the app appeared on stage, 680,500 bookings had taken place without any hitches.

There are four countries from which nearly half a million people came with two year visas based on having someone who guarantees their financial backing at an airport. These include Cubans (104,130), Haitians (194,027), Nicaraguans (86,101), as well as Venezuelans (110,541) for instance, according to CBP.
