USCIS Extends Green Card Validity for Form I-90 Filers
Effective September 10, 2024, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has extended the validity of Permanent Resident Cards (Green Cards) to 36 months for lawful permanent residents who file Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card. This extension applies to both expiring and expired Green Cards.
New 36-Month Extension for I-90 Filers – USCIS Extends Green Card Validity
Previously, Form I-90 receipt notices provided a 24-month extension of the Green Card’s validity. Now, USCIS has updated the receipt notice to offer a 36-month extension for individuals who properly file for Green Card renewal through Form I-90. This change is expected to help applicants who experience longer processing times, because they will receive proof of lawful permanent resident status as they await their renewed Green Card.
Updated Receipt Notices for Pending Cases
Starting September 10, USCIS began issuing amended receipt notices for those with pending Form I-90 applications. These notices, when presented with an expired Green Card, serve as evidence of continued status and employment authorization.
What to Do If You Lose Your Green Card
If your Green Card is lost or unavailable while you wait for a replacement, you can request an appointment at a USCIS Field Office through the USCIS Contact Center. USCIS may issue an Alien Documentation, Identification, and Telecommunications (ADIT) stamp as temporary proof of your lawful permanent resident status after you’ve filed Form I-90.
